When do transfer student-athletes need to report deals?
When a student-athlete is an incoming transfer from a four-year college to your D1 institution, they will need to report deals at your institution in accordance with existing reporting rules (i.e., all deals with compensation that equals or exceeds $600). Deals should be reported at your new institution if they were executed or agreed to on or after the date the student-athlete entered the transfer portal. These deals must be reported to NIL Go within 14 days of full-time enrollment* or before their first scheduled competition, whichever occurs first (NCAA Bylaw 22.2.2.2.5.3). Please note that NCAA Bylaw 22.2.2.2.5.3 supersedes the standard five-day reporting requirement.
Any deals entered into before the student-athlete entered the transfer portal should be entered at the originating institution (only applicable to transfers from other D1 institutions). Prospective four-year college transfers shall not be required to resubmit deals from their old institution that will remain in place at their new institution (NCAA Bylaw 22.2.2.5.2).
For more information, please reference the NCAA rules on transfer student-athlete reporting requirements in Article 22.2.2.5 here.
*Full-time enrollment is defined by each institution but is generally taken to mean the student-athlete is enrolled in 12 or more credit hours for an upcoming term. This is aligned with broader NCAA guidance on full-time enrollment, which can be found here.
How do transfer student-athletes report deals?
In order for an incoming transfer to report deals at your institution, the student-athlete will need a new NIL Go account, which requires an institution email address. Your institution should provide an incoming transfer with an institution email address as soon as possible upon signing with your institution.
When the student-athlete has their new institution email address, they can sign in with their new email and follow the same process as all new student-athletes to create a new account. As with other student-athletes, your institution will be asked to approve the new account. If this student-athlete matches the record of a previous NIL Go account at another institution, you will be asked to confirm that they are a transfer. No deal history or account information will transfer from their previous institution account to their new institution account. By approving their account, you understand that your institution is responsible for inquiring with this student-athlete about any deals at their previous institution that your institution may need to know about, such as:
Deals still awaiting review
Deals in arbitration
Other Not Cleared deals
Ongoing Cleared deals
What if my student-athlete does not have their institution email?
What if my student-athlete does not have their institution email?
To reduce effort for the student-athlete, we recommend that your institution create an institution email address for any incoming transfers that have signed with your institution. If your team has issues with a student-athlete receiving an institution email address within 14 days of enrollment or before their first competition, your institution can create a temporary account using the student-athlete’s personal email.
Temporary accounts provide incoming student-athletes with short-term access to NIL Go if they have not received their institution email address yet but need to report a deal in order to remain in compliance with NCAA rules. Temporary accounts will need to be transitioned to permanent accounts once the student-athlete has an institution email address. Click here to learn more about creating a temporary account.
